Tool Compatibility

Before you buy a battery, make sure that it's compatible with your tool(s):

  • Brand - The battery brand and the tool brand must be the same, e.g. a DeWalt tool can only be powered by a DeWalt battery
  • Voltage - The battery voltage and the tool voltage must be the same, e.g. an 18V tool can only be powered by an 18V battery
  • Chemistry - The battery type and the tool type must be the same, e.g. a Li-ion tool can only be powered by a Li-ion battery
  • Battery connection - The battery connection type and the tool's battery connection type must be the same, e.g. some batteries 'slide on' to the tool, whereas others 'click in' to the tool

Battery Capacity

A battery's capacity is how much energy that it can store. The higher the capacity; the more energy that it can store. More stored energy means that the battery can provide more power and runtime. Battery capacity is measured in amp-hours (Ah), so a 5Ah battery provides much more power and runtime than a 2Ah battery. Before you buy a battery, make sure that the capacity is sufficient for the tasks that your tool(s) will be performing, e.g. An SDS drill will require a high-capacity battery as it will be performing heavy-duty tasks which will quickly use up the battery's stored energy.
